Well, Saturday is now past, and we had a blast! Many folks dressed up in garb/costume. Hawke gave his speech on Tolkien & Trees, and we watched the first halves of the fan films "Born of Hope" (about Aragorn's parents), and "The Hunt for Gollum", and snippets from a BBC documentary filmed in Tolkien's last years, that was very fun to see J.R.R. Tolkien himself in action, chatting away, wandering through Ocford, enjoying fireworks, drinking (at a pub?), smoking his pipe, and much more.

Several people came by simply because they saw the signs in the hallway and wondered what it was about. Some were Tolkien fans and some were not but knew others who were. A trio of ladies from Idaho and Colorado popped in, had some conversations, and opted to try out the new Hobbit board game (still in the plastic, that I picked up a few weeks ago) from Fantasy Flight Games. They said they had fun, but it was a bit confusing, I'll have to check into it later.

The web video streaming worked (without audio) and the chatroom. There were at least 54 people trying to listen to the speech audio. Unfortunately I had trouble with the audio stream for the speech on Tolkien & Trees and the Q&A afterwards. My apologies for that. Fortunately the laptop did record the audio, and also the speech and Q&A were recorded on video, which I have uploaded to the website. I will add a link shortly to that when finished uploading. Hopefully the broadcasting will be fully functional.

Fank had his wonderful chainmail and other wares on display. Lynn the person who designed Hawke's and Katy's wonderful garb, was unable to make an appearance due to illness (we greatly missed her, hope she gets well soon!).

There was much more ,but those are some of the highlights.

Adult Game Tables at maximum capacity, but waitlist available.

The gaming tables for Adults are now at full capacity. You can still RSVP, but you will be on the wait list. This means you can still show up, and if someone no-shows (usually between 1-3 end up not making it the last minute), you can have their seat. But if everyone who has sent an RSVP shows, you can participate at other game tables (board games, video games, wargames, etc.), but we can not assure you that you will be able to participate at one of the RPG game tables. We still have a few seats left at the youth RPG tables. We still have a few seats left for other activities, and audience general seating as well. Hope to see you at Tolkien Moot VII. If you decide not to make it, you can watch and listen on line.

Merp.com Accepting Applications for Volunteer Coordinator Position

Merp.com has need of a Volunteer Coordinator to manage the number of volunteers (averages between 15-20) that help keep the site running. The position only requires about 15 minutes a day (3-5 days per week) checking email and forum postings, and contacting the related volunteer(s). This is a volunteer position. See the details of this posting for more information, and please spread the word to others...

The main issue seems to be just helping volunteers know what they are doing, and giving them occasional gentle promptings to help them keep on track for the areas they volunteered for.

As it is with any volunteer task, the amount of time spent is highly variable and up to the individual, but a Volunteer Coordinator would not be expected to spend more than about 15 minutes per day, 3-5 days per week, checking email and forum postings from volunteers.

The following would be the expected tasks and responsibilities of the Merp.com Volunteer Coordinator:

Maintain a list of active volunteers and their role assignments (roles of some of those volunteers would be listed as forum moderator, irc moderator, news postings page, links maintainer, etc.)

Add/remove website privileges for volunteers (doesn't require any technical background, you can be easily trained how to do this through the web (it is simply a web page where the user is listed, and you click some checkboxes)

Receive, forward (mostly), or respond (occasionally) to emails on various sections of the website (helping to direct to the correct volunteer)

Monitoring and helping gently "nudge" the volunteers that commit to a task, with a simple reminder, to help keep them on their task

Encouraging additional people to join as volunteers.

Must have acceptable English writing skills (for emails and forum postings)

Would be helpful to have someone who is multilingual, but not required by any means

I can tell you from personal experience that Merp.com is actually something worth putting on a resume. I have ended up with several unrelated hirings (a radio station, 2 different technology companies, and others) from interviews because the managers/executives/owners of the interviewing business knew of merp.com and the community building that once thrived there, so this is something that can help those looking to strengthen their resume in a number of different fields if they wished.

If you can commit to just 15 minutes per day, for about 3-5 days per week, and think you would be the right person for this position,

please email merpdotcom at gmail dot com.

Even if you do not have previous experience, your application may still be considered, the most important role of the position is the reliability of following through with others.

Please spread the word to others you think might be interested.
